About Us

Launched in 2018, Survey 160 was founded on the idea that text messages (SMS) can be used to efficiently field public opinion surveys at scale. With support from Harmony Labs, New Media Ventures, and Higher Ground Labs, cofounders Nathaniel Lubin and Kevin Collins sought to raise response rates, lower costs, and reach hard-to-find members of the public by leveraging the efficiency of SMS-optimized research. Focused initially only on live-interviewer formats, we have since expanded to field text-to-web surveys and a range of supporting services designed to help clients and partners source the best samples possible for their research.

Why “Survey 160”? The 160 in our name refers to the number of characters per text message segment. (Though, because multiple segments can be seamlessly joined, the character count is not a limit on length.)

Values

As a company we try to hold ourselves and our clients to the following standards:

Our mission is to improve the value and quality of research—especially research deployed in the public interest—by sourcing better data with technology. We are committed to working only with organizations that are aligned with our values, whether they are corporations, non-profit advocacy organizations, and political campaigns and committees. To that end, we do not have a partisan commitment or ideological requirement dictating use of the platform. At the same time, we do not embrace false equivalencies, and will only work with candidates or groups that meet our standards.

1. A commitment to following facts and rational decisionmaking

As data-driven company, we believe in data-informed, factual assessments of the world and using those assessments to steer decisions. We will work only with organizations and partners who embrace that philosophy, including a respect for the scientific process and its role, whether in policy matters like climate change or factual reporting of news events.

2. A commitment to respecting democratic institutions:

As an American company with deep belief in the American political process, we believe in respecting and strengthening our public institutions and only working with organizations that honor that commitment. This includes respect for principles like due process, as well as a commitment to strengthening and further access to the vote for all citizens.

3. A commitment to aspire and work towards justice

As a technology provider, we are conscious that tools can be used for good or ill, and believe in consciously evaluating the impact of our work to ensure that we advance the interests of those least able to advocate for themselves.
